The Nantucket Fan Back Arm Chair is our largest chair and was designed as an “easy” chair in the 18th century. This chair is roomy enough for just about anyone and makes a great executive office chair. This chair is also a great chair to put in front of your fireplace. This chair features hand-carved ears and knuckles on the hands. This rare and unique Fan Back Arm chair is based on chairs from the Nantucket Massachusetts region made about 1805. The fan back style was typically made as an armless side chair throughout New England in this late period, but the arm version was popular in the Massachusetts area, specifically Nantucket. Everything about this chair is extraordinary - the large seat and wide splay of the hands, the bold and wide comb with high upturned outlined ears, and the bold turnings. The strong horizontal lines of the comb, seat and stretchers are balanced by the fine turnings and strong diagonals of the back brace. The brace is unusual with an oval seat, but is integral to the design. The arms are sawn rather then bent adding to the bold visual effect of this style. (detail) |
